What Every Owasso Homeowner Needs to Know About Their Electrical System

Hey there, I’m Terry Davis, a Master Electrician and owner of TL Davis Electric & Design. I’ve been working on homes around Owasso, Oklahoma for over 30 years, and if there’s one thing I keep seeing over and over again — it’s overloaded electrical circuits. If you’re in town and need an electrician who shows up and gets it done right, click here to check out our Owasso service page.

Now, you might be thinking, “Terry, what does that even mean?”

Let me break it down for you, plain and simple.

What’s an Overloaded Circuit, Anyway?

An overloaded circuit happens when there’s more electrical demand on a circuit than it was ever designed to handle. Think of your home’s wiring like a highway. Too many cars? You get a traffic jam. Too many appliances pulling power? You get heat buildup, tripping breakers, or even melted wires behind your walls. Not good.

The Most Common Overloads I See in Owasso Homes:

□ 1. Too Many Devices on One Outlet

It’s way too common. You’ve got a power strip with a TV, game console, Wi-Fi router, laptop charger, and a mini fridge — all pulling from the same outlet. That’s like running a marathon in cowboy boots. Your circuit’s gonna give out.

□ 2. Bathroom Blow Dryer + Heater Combo

Blow dryers, curling irons, space heaters — those all draw a ton of current. If you’re running two or more at once on a 15-amp bathroom circuit, it’s going to trip every time. I’ve rewired more bathrooms in Owasso than I can count because of this.

□ 3. Kitchen Circuit Nightmares

Microwaves, coffee makers, toaster ovens, and air fryers — all on the same circuit? Yikes. Modern kitchens need multiple dedicated circuits, but older homes in Owasso (especially pre-2000 builds) just weren’t wired for that kind of load.

❄️ 4. Window AC Units in the Summer

I get so many calls every June and July from folks saying their breakers keep tripping. Most of the time, it’s a window AC plugged into a bedroom circuit that’s already running lights, outlets, and maybe even a TV. That’s an overload waiting to happen.

□ 5. Laundry Room Madness

Washers and gas dryers need their own space. But in a lot of homes I service in Owasso, laundry rooms are running off general lighting circuits. Add an iron or folding station light and bam — breaker trip city.

□️ 6. Garage Overloads

Tool benches, chest freezers, air compressors — a lot of homeowners treat their garage like a workshop, but most garages only have one 15-amp circuit. You flip the switch, the freezer cuts off, and now you’ve got defrosted meat. No fun.

Signs You’ve Got an Overload

Here’s what to look out for:

  • Breakers tripping frequently
  • Dimming lights when appliances turn on
  • Buzzing outlets or light switches
  • Warm faceplates or a burning smell (this one’s serious — shut it down immediately)

What’s the Fix?

Good news — this isn’t a death sentence for your wiring.

We can:

  • Add dedicated circuits for heavy-duty appliances
  • Upgrade old panels (especially if you’re still rocking a 100-amp setup)
  • Rewire problem areas like the kitchen or garage
  • Install GFCIs where needed for safety and code compliance
