Electrical Short in Bathroom
By Terry Davis, Local Electrician & Owner of Davis Electric & Design

Hey there, Bixby homeowners. If your kitchen or bathroom has been acting up lately—lights flickering, breakers tripping, outlets not working—I’m not surprised. I’ve been fixing electrical issues around Bixby for years, and those two rooms? They’re always the troublemakers.

Here’s a rundown of the most common electrical problems I come across in Bixby kitchens and bathrooms—and what you can do about 'em:
Not Enough Circuits for the Kitchen
Let’s start with the kitchen. Bixby homes—especially some of the older ones—weren’t wired for modern life. You’ve got air fryers, espresso machines, microwaves, and maybe even a wine fridge all fighting for power. I see breakers tripping constantly because there just aren’t enough dedicated circuits.

GFCI Issues in Bathrooms
If you’ve got a bathroom outlet that trips every time you plug in a hair dryer or trimmer, chances are it’s either an old GFCI or none at all. I still see homes where standard outlets are inches from the sink or tub. That’s not just outdated—it’s dangerous. GFCIs are designed to save lives, and you need them wherever there’s water.

Flickering Vanity Lights
Bathroom lights that flicker or buzz? Usually, that’s a loose wire connection or a bad dimmer switch. I’ve swapped out plenty of old-school switches that just couldn’t handle modern LED lights. Sometimes it’s just a cheap fixture that needs upgrading.

No Exhaust Fan or Improper Wiring
Steam’s no joke. Without a properly wired bathroom exhaust fan, all that moisture builds up and starts messing with outlets, switches, and even light fixtures. I’ve rewired fans that were underpowered or hooked into a light switch the wrong way. That humidity eats away at your wiring over time.

Burned Out Kitchen Outlets
If you’ve got outlets in the kitchen that don’t work—or feel hot to the touch—turn them off and call me. I’ve pulled scorched wires out of outlets overloaded by multiple appliances. Sometimes folks plug too many things into one outlet, not realizing that it’s only rated for so much juice.

Improper Grounding in Wet Areas
Bathrooms and kitchens both need solid grounding, and I’ve seen plenty of houses in Bixby where the grounding is either loose, missing, or done halfway. No grounding means more shock risk. It’s not something you want to ignore around sinks, tubs, and dishwashers.

Broken Light Switches
Sometimes it’s simple—a bathroom light switch just doesn’t work anymore, or it sparks when you flip it. That’s usually a worn-out or cracked switch. Quick fix, but left alone, it could cause bigger issues. I’ve replaced hundreds of those in Bixby homes over the years.

Overloaded Bathroom Circuits
Hair dryers, curling irons, straighteners—all on one 15-amp circuit? Not a good idea. I get calls from folks who say the breaker trips every time two people get ready at once. That’s your house telling you it needs another circuit or a higher-capacity one.

No AFCI Protection
AFCI (arc fault circuit interrupter) breakers help prevent electrical fires, and they’re required in newer builds—but a lot of older homes in Bixby don’t have them in kitchens or bathrooms. I always suggest upgrading if you’re doing a remodel or having other work done.

DIY Wiring Surprises
Let’s be honest—some folks mean well but shouldn’t be messing with wiring. I’ve opened up bathroom walls and found speaker wire being used for power, or junction boxes hidden behind tile. Kitchens too. It’s all good until something shorts out or sparks.

So if you’re living in Bixby and your kitchen or bathroom is giving you electrical trouble—or you’re about to start a renovation--give me a call.

I’ll get everything squared away and safe so you can focus on living, not flipping breakers or dodging shocks.

Catch you soon,
Terry Davis
